Ramjerdi Garden–Park
Situated at the end of the historic Afifabad Street, directly facing the forecourt and grand mansion of Afifabad Garden, the Ramjerdi Garden–Park reinterprets the dialogue between heritage and contemporary urban life. Once an abandoned and enclosed site hidden behind high walls, the garden has been revived through its transformation into a public park under the municipality’s initiative, restoring both vitality and collective memory to the area.
A guiding principle of the design was the complete preservation of existing trees—not a single one was removed. Every path, platform, and gathering space was shaped in respectful harmony with the natural terrain. Surrounded by four main streets, the site now enjoys multiple access points and fluid permeability, transforming it into an open, connective landscape at the heart of the urban fabric.
Because the garden sits below the surrounding streets and the Afifabad forecourt, the design introduces a peripheral terrace and a colonnade inspired by the traditional architecture of Shiraz. These new entrances, articulated through broad, inviting stairways, serve not only as thresholds but also as active urban stages—places to sit, observe, and engage. The colorful, translucent arcades at these entrances reinterpret the aesthetic of historical Shirazi architecture through a contemporary architectural language, drawing every passerby gently into the garden.
The park is organized around a square plan, with a central pavilion-like element recalling the historic kushk of Persian gardens. Intersecting pathways and elevated walkways converge toward this focal point, echoing the classical geometry of gardens such as Afifabad, where every route led to the heart. Moving along these raised paths offers visitors a renewed experience of the Persian garden—a journey that combines expansive views with a poetic connection to landscape heritage.
At the four corners of the park, small pavilion-like structures have been designed to house cafés, resting areas, and visitor amenities. Positioned at key viewpoints, these structures enhance both comfort and spatial quality, turning the garden into a vibrant destination for daily leisure and an inviting stop for tourists and residents alike.
Woven between the curving pedestrian paths are benches, resting nodes, scenic overlooks, and diverse plantings, creating a calm yet sensorial environment that encourages contemplation and social interaction.
With minimal intervention and deep respect for nature and history, Ramjerdi Garden–Park presents a contemporary reinterpretation of the Persian garden. It not only recalls the timeless beauty of Shiraz’s historic landscapes but also narrates a modern story of the coexistence of architecture, landscape, and urban life—a place where serenity and social vitality intertwine, offering a renewed vision of Shiraz today.
